What is A Caregiver?
A caregiver is someone who offers medical, emotional, or psychological support. Such as doctors, psychologists, therapists, social workers, chaplains, palliative care (end of life) personnel, emergency personnel or natural disasters, mass shootings, pandemics, animal rescue. And of course, professional and family caregivers.
Caregivers offers personal care assistance including bathing, dressing and mobility, preparing food and even feeding, supervising the patient’s taking medications, and offering mental and emotional enrichment activities.
In addition, family caregivers manage medical appointments, talk to doctors, therapists, do laundry, manage finances, manage home visitors, as respite caregivers, nurses, etc. She usually transports the patient to medical and emergency appointments, manages the family dynamics of children and non-caregiver relatives.
The extended family dynamics deserves a whole chapter in terms of the stress it sometimes adds to the caregiver. The family caregiver also manages household affairs, such as paying rent or financing, paying utilities, buying groceries, and other necessities other than groceries such as personal care items and medical equipment, and to assist with mobility.
